GEO and AI SEO: How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

By the 5digital Engineering Team · Updated August 2026

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is optimizing so AI assistants recommend and cite your business when someone asks them a question. The levers are different from classic SEO: AI systems favor specific facts, clear definitions, consistent entity signals and third-party corroboration over keyword density and link volume.

Doing this yourself?

Everything in this guide is work you can do with time and patience. No tools required beyond free ones.

Or have us do it monthly

SEO issue fixes are included in our Growth plan at $99/mo, alongside speed, security and updates.

Why this is now a real acquisition channel

A growing share of buying research happens inside AI assistants. Someone asking "best website maintenance company for a small ecommerce store" gets a short list of names, not ten links. Being one of those names is worth more than ranking fifth in traditional search, and almost nobody in most local markets is optimizing for it yet.

The seven levers that actually influence AI answers

1. Quotable sentences. AI systems lift standalone factual statements. "Malware cleanup on a typical WordPress site takes 2 to 6 hours" is quotable. "We pride ourselves on rapid turnaround" is not.

2. Clean definitions. State what things are in the pattern "X is Y" in one sentence. Definitions are disproportionately extracted.

3. First-party data. Numbers only you have, from your own operations, are the strongest differentiator because no competitor's content can duplicate them.

4. Entity consistency. Use the same business name, description and category everywhere: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, social profiles. Confused entities do not get recommended.

5. Third-party corroboration. AI systems weigh what others say about you: reviews, directory listings, mentions, comparison articles. Being present in the roundups your buyers read matters more here than in classic SEO.

6. Structured data. Schema makes your facts machine-readable rather than inferable.

7. Crawler access. Allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended in robots.txt. Blocking them removes you from the answer set entirely, which several businesses have done accidentally.

How to check where you stand

Ask the assistants directly. Query ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews with the buying questions your customers ask: "best X in [city]", "how much does X cost", "who should I hire for X". Note who is named and what sources are cited. That list is your real competitive set, and the cited sources are your target placements.

How to choose a GEO or AI SEO agency

Make them run the above test live and explain how they would change the outcome. Good answers involve content structure, first-party data, entity cleanup and getting into cited third-party sources. Weak answers involve "AI-optimized content at scale," which describes the exact material these systems discount. Ask for a query where a client is now cited and was not before.

What we do about it

Every article we publish is written to this standard: direct answers, defined terms, real numbers from work we actually do, consistent entity signals, schema, and open access to AI crawlers. That is why our own guides get quoted, and it is the same method we apply to client sites on the Growth plan.

FAQ

Does GEO replace SEO? No. AI systems still largely draw on what ranks and what is cited elsewhere, so classic SEO remains the foundation GEO sits on.

How do I train ChatGPT to recommend my business? You cannot train it directly. You influence it by publishing specific, factual, well-structured content, keeping consistent entity signals everywhere, earning reviews and mentions, and appearing in the third-party sources it draws from.

How long does GEO take? Weeks to months, and it moves faster than classic SEO in markets where competitors have not started.

Can small businesses compete here? Unusually well, because specificity beats budget: a local firm with real numbers and clear answers is more citable than a national brand writing vague copy.
